Upcoming Changes and Projects

Posted January 8th, 2013 at 12:12 pm.

Spring and Summer 2013 look to be a busy time for Information Services.  We thought we might take a moment to give you a heads up about upcoming changes, projects, and maintenance and how they might affect you.

Maintenance and changes to core campus systems

Many of the servers for email, file storage, authentication, network services (such as dhcp and dns), and other core services have been in place since our last major technology infrastructure change in 2008.  Some of these have reached end-of-life, and others are overdue for significant maintenance.  In addition, a series of minor but important changes will need to happen to prepare for parts of the Bi-College SEADS initiative (see the SEADS blog to hear more).

While we are not changing all of our systems to different technologies as we did in 2008, over the next few months we will be upgrading, replacing, and making changes to some of these components.  Much of this work will be invisible to our community, but will result in a better, more consistent technology environment and address several known issues.  Some of this work has already begun.  We will communicate about some specifics as they are likely to impact your work, but we will also be working on back-end changes almost constantly throughout the semester and summer.  We may not be able to provide as much notice or detail as you may be used to in every instance.  If you do experience momentary or minor visible changes or errors, please be aware that we are working on these systems, and simply report it to the Help Desk.

A side effect of this maintenance is that we will be regularizing and correcting issues with some of our automated systems.  This may result in minor changes in function on your desktop, we will communicate about these changes as they occur.

Looking Forward

Here are just a few projects on the horizon for this semester/year

  • Completion of secondary Internet feed (w/ Haverford and Swarthmore) – just weeks away!
  • Implementation of SEADS components such as joint registration with Haverford (July/Aug).
  • Investigation into the future of email and calendaring at Bryn Mawr.
  • Looking at alternate file storage options, especially for students and faculty.
• CMS for Web Editing and Management – phased implementation of a system with improved online editing and content sharing options.
