LITS Safe Browsing Initiative

Posted August 24th, 2017 at 8:00 am.

LITS is pleased to announce that over the next few weeks, community members will begin to benefit from extra scam and phishing protection in their email and web browsers.

No action is required on your part, but we’d like you to be aware of a few new protections you may encounter:

Suspicious Link Warnings

Clicking on links in emails can be risky because a malicious email could direct you to a fraudulent site that asks for personal information and/or login credentials. This service will deliver a variety of warnings if it thinks you’re about to open a malicious site. It may warn you that it is scanning the site, or it may block it entirely. For examples and more information, see Office 365 Advanced Threat Protection.

A side-effect of this service is that you may begin to see that some well-known, legitimate links are also being rewritten – these links may look very long or otherwise odd. For example, this may occur in voicemail notifications and library notices.

Attachment Scanning

Files can be harmful as well, particularly coming from an unknown sender. You may see a window informing you that an attachment you’ve received in an email has been scanned. This service offers an extra layer of protection against downloading or opening a malicious file. For examples and more information, see Office 365 Advanced Threat Protection.

Malicious Website Blocking

Web browsing is risky as well, and we now have the ability to protect community members from accidentally visiting known malicious sites when on campus, including sites that participate in:

  • infecting computers with malware
  • phishing or identity theft (trying to fraudulently gain access to your personal information or accounts)
  • other security or privacy related threats.

Bryn Mawr College uses well-known and respected lists of malicious websites to identify and block threats. We may also block a site based on reports or incidents from within our own community. If you try to reach a blocked site, you will see this page:

LITS does not, under any circumstances, block websites based on content. If you believe a website has been blocked in error, or you have any questions, please contact the Help Desk (610-526-7440, help@brynmawr.edu
