Latest Windows Update: Back Up Bookmarks Before Running

Posted July 12th, 2018 at 12:13 pm.

Over the last few days, you may have noticed a notification window prompting you to install a new Windows update (version 1802) on your College-owned computer. LITS has received reports that in some cases, this update deletes bookmarks from some browsers. This issue did not surface in our pre-release testing and we have reported it to Microsoft.

As with most major Windows updates, you have the ability to run or postpone until a time that is convenient for you. If you are concerned about losing your browser bookmarks, LITS recommends backing them up prior to running the update.

Backing Up Bookmarks in Chrome

  1. Go to your Bookmark manager (chrome://bookmarks/ in the address bar)
  2. Click the three dots in the upper right corner of the screen
  3. Export bookmarks as an html document
  4. After installing the Windows update, follow the same procedure to Import bookmarks
